Liberty Pole Relic Unearthed In Manchester Va
In Manchester on April 23 an old liberty pole stub from 1865 was found three feet below Main and Franklin during excavation for an automatic traffic signal. The timber, about six feet long, will be preserved in a log cabin on the fair grounds. The pole had long marked the town center and was part of a historic sequence involving rebel symbols, Union sentiment, and a local dispute over timber theft.
