Iowa railroad mileage ranks fourth in nation in 1900s report

Des Moines reports that Iowa, among the first states to create a railroad commission, now rides fourth in U S mileage behind Texas Alabama and Pennsylvania. The 19th century growth recounts early lines from 1855 onward and the 1878 law creating three railroad commissioners to regulate rates and service. Electric rail beginnings appear with the Waterloo and Cedar Falls Rapid Transit in 1901.
