Bad Winter and Acid Rations Ruin Chick Rearing
Cedar Falls April 22. Oscar Grow of Waterloo cites three causes for poor chick output this spring: hens kept indoors by heavy snow and cold, lack of direct sunshine, and improper rations. He argues winter feeding of cereals and meat scraps caused acidosis and suggests alkaline rations such as vegetables and leafy matter, especially alfalfa meal, to improve results. Grow predicts the spring poultry crop may fall by about 40 percent.
