Mother of Seven Divorced From Religious Zealot

In Mason City Iowa on April 22, Maude Darland won an absolute divorce from Clyde Darland head of the Helping Hand Mission. She received $50 monthly alimony and custody of seven children. Darland allegedly forced strict Adventist practices including no meat for ten years and one hour of prayer each morning and one and a half hours each night. The petition accuses him of neglect and controlling behavior, including forcing children to four mile walks to beet fields and restricting schooling to Seventh Day Adventist institutions.
