Washington as a pragmatic leader in Woodward’s portrait
The piece critiques a biographer’s portrayal of George Washington as grounded in verifiable history. It argues Washington’s character arose from his upbringing and environment, noting his image as an intellectual understates his practical, iron will. The essay presents Washington as a human rather than a pedestal-worthy saint.
