Alfalfa supply depleted prompts lime and soil work

Bremer county farmers focus on soil lime and legume growth. County Agent D. D. Offringa notes Maurice Woodcock’s alfalfa trials starting 1926 yielded about two tons per acre in three cuttings. After alfalfa depletion seven cows dropped 40 pounds milk daily, prompting plans to lime additional acres and expand alfalfa to feed 13 cows next spring. Charles Sietman to plant three more acres and apply 150 pounds per acre superphosphate. Demand for limestone trains grows as 23 carloads are ordered and freight plans consider delivery near buyers’ farms.
