Monte Saunders Pleads Guilty in Liquor Case Brief
Monte Saunders, a noted liquor runner with prior arrests, pleaded guilty to a second violation and contempt of court yesterday before Judge HL 33. He was fined 4000 dollars for the first charge and sentenced to one year in county jail for the second, with the sentence suspended on good behavior. Saunders paid fines in cash and said he would move from the city. County Attorney W A Cook said many respected local Black citizens supported the adjudication. Saunders faces an indictment for a third offense that could bring a three year penitentiary term if proven. The state had no evidence for a liquor nuisance charge at trial. The first conviction dates to 1941.
