Dairyman Builds High Butterfat Holstein Herd

Floyd Gilley, a 24 year old dairyman near Maynard, Iowa, has built a herd of 12 purebred Holsteins that averaged 46.6 pounds of fat for four months. His cows yielded 60.7 pounds in February and 55.4 in April, with one cow at 78.9 pounds in April. He feeds oilmeal, soybeans, and corn byproducts, along with plenty of silage and hay. Partners J. C. Davis and H. B. Hough supported the venture, buying cows and helping erect barns. Fayette County eyes strong sales this year as the herd grows and participates in local breed efforts.
