Lieut. Leon John Nugent of Washburn was killed in an Ellington Field Texas airplane accident. He had trained at Ellington and Omaha and was to serve in France soon. He was 28, a civil engineer former resident of Waterloo, with a brother in France and several relatives in service. Funeral and burial planned in Washburn, with arrival anticipated Friday or Saturday.

The Cedar Rapids school board votes to discontinue teaching German at Roosevelt High and asks the state defense council to bar German ministers from using German pulpits, claiming no need for German in Iowa now. The note ends with a call to buy Liberty Bonds.
Secretary Baker, back from seven weeks in Europe, urged renewed American war support including liberty loans. He praised American troops in France for courage and endurance and noted cordial relations with French and British authorities. Cedar Rapids April 17 evidence to Senators Cummins and Kenyon and Congressman Good from Samuel Heald alleging Paul Heald American banker was murdered January 30 in Lima Peru. Heald, once local, was agent for Merchants Bank of the Americas. The investigation aims to prove murder by German agents fearing exposure of activities in Peru. Body found in a Lima irrigation ditch, drowned after bruising, burial planned in Cedar Rapids with support from Boy Liberty Bonds.
April 17 dispatch reports British troops regaining Wytschaete in Flanders as German forces launch repeated assaults near Bailleul. Desperate daytime fighting continues west of Bailleul with costly German losses. A massive artillery duel rages along the northern front as guns fire through the night, the shelling heard far away.
Paul Bolo Pasha, condemned traitor, faced a forest firing squad at Vincennes. He wore a new suit and white gloves, received communion, and died after the rifles spoke. His brother received a silk lace handkerchief, and two bullet-pierced kerchiefs were found over his heart for his family.
Paul Stenzel of Waverly was lodged in the county jail after appearing before United States Commissioner J. E. Dempster. He was bound over to await action by the federal grand jury on a charge of attempting to obstruct the army draft service. his brother, a Waverly attorney, offered a $5,000 bond which was rejected due to the brother's own recent arrest on sedition charges and current bonds.
