Election Ordered for Fifty third Iowa Regiment Colonel
Guy Logan issues orders in Iowa Territory appointing Lieutenant Colonel Charles W. Cotton to command the Fifty third regiment until a colonel is elected. The adjutant general also calls for an election to fill the vacancy from Louis J. Rowell’s resignation. All officers in the regiment may vote. Major Barclay of Tipton is favored in a straw poll. Ballots due by 6 p.m. April 10. votes opened at 9 a.m. April 20.

At 11 o'clock a second alarm came from Fourth Street East as a cigaret blaze started in a basement window with no serious damage. Firemen also answered a call at Second and Randolph, a false alarm attributed to youths violating city ordinances.
