Shorty Dolan Bage From War Returns Home
Shorty Dolan, a well known Waterloo character, arrived home this morning after six months with the U S Army in France. He left Waterloo for Camp Grant, Rockford, as an officer’s orderly, then transferred to a line company and became a doughboy. At Le Mans he found the city joyful over the armistice, with locals eager for nuts and wine. Previously he sold score cards and popcorn, doing odd jobs for friends, and plans to rest awhile before deciding his next move.

The article notes a shift to frugal county spending as drunkenness control costs drop. It cites Black Hawk county’s 1919 inebriety hospital bill at 5 508 dollars for the first quarter, down from prior era expenses. It mentions improved taxpayer relief and fewer headaches. It also reports Knights Templar Easter service details at First Baptist Church with Clyde J. Askins preaching at 2 p.m. and a uniformed procession from the asylum.
