1924 Butterfat Price Falls Below Previous Season

Iowa creameries report 1924 average butterfat price at 44.31 cents per pound across 103 co‑ops, down from 49.5 cents in 1923. Despite lower prices, total butterfat received rose as production expanded, with 105 plants handling 89,964 pounds per plant on average. Costs fell as volume rose, boosting potential profits for well‑fed cows. Efforts by the National Dairy Council and Iowa campaigns aim to boost consumption and fund an advertising drive, possibly $500,000 in year one, with local farmer contributions suggested to amplify returns. Legislative wins include banning butter substitutes in state institutions and implementing pasteurization recording thermometers in plants.
