Conditions Worse As Prohibition Drunkenness Rises Across Nation
Washington April 13 UP Drunkenness is said to be more widespread now than in the open saloon era. Stanley Shirk of the New York Moderation League reports arrests for drunkenness rose from 240,000 in 1920 to 50,000 in 1924 in 447 representative places, with increases across states and cities, suggesting the Volstead act failed to curb temperance. He cites drivers and minors as growing problems and argues restrictive laws work better than dry laws, while noting uneven results among cities and states in the prior prohibition years.
