Government launches drive to seize bootlegged whisky profits
Washington April 13. The government ordered a nationwide drive to force whisky dealers to disgorge millions in hidden revenues. Internal Revenue and prohibition officials will use raids and seized records to prove tax payments. Estimates put bootleggers at about 50 000 with potential tax and penalties. Officials cite Georgia rings and wider networks fueling dry states. The effort seeks to prove gains from illegal whisky sales and may yield over 25 million dollars in the current year.
