Illinois Central trap uses fake injury to study ambulance chasers
St Paul court dismissed a $25,000 personal injury suit against Illinois Central after judge Hand found it was staged. William B Chambers, longtime IC employee, faked an injury and collaborated with LaSalle Illinois men and St Paul attorneys to study how ambulance chasers operate. Chambers testified that the suit was started at IC’s request to learn common tactics and that he was not injured. He claims two Illinois physicians gave false diagnoses and that runners sought to obtain his case for trial in Minnesota. A hospital room stenographer's report and a $60 Western Union order were also presented as part of the scheme.
