Soybeans Suggested as Hay Crop Where Clover Has Failed

In Fayette county clover seeded last spring failed to survive the open winter, prompting questions about replacements. Soybeans are praised as a strong hay crop for all stock, especially when legume hay is killed. Dairymen report soybeans can yield two to three loads per acre, comparable to alfalfa, if planted in rows for cultivation and harvested after flowering. Planting involves 40 to 50 pounds per acre, binder use to cut, shock for ten days, then barn storage. Some binders struggle with vine tangles, but overall soybeans are considered a viable dairy cow hay option.
