Allied dispatch from France reports the German assault of about 800 troops northwest of Toul repulsed after nearly two hours of fighting. Americans suffered no prisoners and inflicted heavy losses, aided by gas shells and disciplined artillery.
A Special dispatch from April 10 presents Lieut. Col. Paul Azan of the French staff, arguing the German drive signals a return to the war of positions. He asserts the German goal is compromised, warns of grave dangers to the attackers, and notes the need for coordinated Allied action as the battle lines shift.

The navy announces deaths of Seaman Francis Grimes of Roadhouse Illinois from an accidental bullet wound Seaman Mathew John Duller of Chicago killed on shore leave and Mess Attendant Henry McCorkle of Philadelphia who died from a stab wound on April 4 all among casualties listed in Washington.
Amsterdam reports a Cologne Gazette correspondent describes German forces crossing the Somme front by concentrating a hundred heavy mine throwers and firing them simultaneously by electricity. Bridges along the Oise were then attacked and Chauny's southern suburb stormed, with enemy troops killed or captured.
Allied line reports fierce fighting across a 25 mile front from La Bassee to Ypres Comines canal. Wytschaete and Armentieres change hands as Germans push near Messines ridge while British counterattacks regain La Creche. Submarine losses cited and plans to wipe out the British army discussed by Berlin.

London reports the British have withdrawn from Armentieres as heavy fighting rages along the front from La Bassée canal to the Ypres Comines canal. The war office notes little change north of Armentieres though fierce action continues near Lestrem, Armentieres, Piégsteert, Messines, and Wytschaete with gas-filled conditions at Armentieres.
Paris reports a German attack on the Champagne last night was broken up by French fire. Heavy artillery combat raged on the principal front between Montdidier and Noyon with intense fighting.
Berlin reports a successful assault between Armentieres and La Bassee canal after heavy artillery and mine barrages. About 6,000 prisoners and 100 guns were captured. North of Armentieres the attacker penetrated English lines on both sides of Waasten Warneton.
United States with Portugal's consent has established a naval base on the Azores to protect Atlantic trade routes. Guns landed to fortify the station, serving as a base for American submarines destroyers and other craft and as a homing station for airplanes. Negotiations with Portugal seek full cooperation for defense. The station enhances logistics for Atlantic routes to southern Europe the Mediterranean South America and Gulf ports.
Four thousand and fifty-one residents in Sioux City Iowa subscribed 2 528400 to the third liberty loan in one hour, yielding a per capita sale of 63.36. The New York reserve district doubled sales of the second loan, with districts reporting 212,005,250 for the first three days. Chicago reached 40,000,000, about one third of its quota, amid strong rural participation and wide bond uptake.
J O Bentall socialist candidate for governor found guilty on two espionage act counts by a federal jury in Minneapolis. Max penalty is 20 years and $10,000 fine. sentencing set for next Friday. Bentall already has a one year sentence for obstructing the draft.

Grinnell Iowa April 11 James Norman Wall of Colfax Grinnell college's famous airman has brought down two more German planes according to messages received here from the front Wall since his transfer from the British forces early in the year has become noted as one of the most daring aviators in the American flying corps
Capt William A Redmond, son of John Redmond, said in the House of Commons that Ireland may refuse conscription and the 1914 pro Allied sentiment has shifted due to distrust of the British government. He warned Ireland tomorrow could be hostile if the government acts. In Dublin calm prevails among Sinn Fein but Irish volunteers reportedly have orders about potential conscription and public bodies denounce the manpower bill.

Berlin reports 15,000 German troops along Finland's southern coast clash with Finnish rebels near Viborg and Helsingfors as Entente diplomats observe 30 to 40 Russian submarines and destroyers and four to five battleships off Helsingfors. A German squadron reportedly lands at Lovisa between Helsingfors and Viborg.
John Murray, freed from county jail to aid food production, declares his innocence in a larceny charge. The county attorney recommended release, citing his intention to toil in the soil within hours and the wartime labor need as justification.
