Sioux City faces a nationwide draft evasion sweep as the federal and local agents prepare to mobilize in the coming weeks. Officials quote a large pool of men liable for service and anticipate mass roundups, with several cases already reported to military authorities.
Cedar Rapids April 10 Judge Henry T Reed in district court imposed near maximum sentences on 14 alleged violators of the dry amendment. Fines ranged from 75 to 200 dollars plus costs. Only one case will be argued. Adolph Tesha pleaded not guilty and is freed on bail with next term set for his case.

In Fort Madison Iowa on April 10 Epstasio Estrada a Mexican laborer crawled under an express train to free his jacket snagged on a bolt. The train sped into Illinois with a silk shipment dragging him by his feet and hands until rescued near Galesburg. If he survives doctors fear possible insanity from fright. A separate note from Knoxville reports rats near Sam Phillips farm 22 miles southeast killing six lambs by eating their eyes prompting the farmer to kill twenty rats.
Council Bluffs April 10. Tuomas K Mills filed for divorce from Beatrice Afiis living in Bexhill England, alleging she refuses to join him in America after the war. He says he sent $140 for travel and that since his arrival in Council Bluffs she won’t answer his letters.
April 10 La Porte City fire officials report a blaze at the J W Stewart cement factory in the northeast part of town. The fire started when a gasoline engine in the engine room backfired igniting spilled gasoline, quickly reaching the supply tank and ceiling. Rafters and partitions were damaged but the fire department limited damage to the engine room. Stewart held 70 bags of cement in the storeroom the day before, which remained unharmed. No insurance coverage on building or stock.
Tuesday night chatter centers on Will Goon driving to Des Moines for service work this week while A B Baker, meeting Monday afternoon, appears in Waterloo. Mrs Treva Smith, Waterloo, recovering from muscular rheumatism after a Sunday visit with Mrs Berryhill, shows limited improvement. George Ponsford of Ponsford Brothers Garage, Waterloo, traveled to Port City and Fiat, Mich, for business and a car call, with Ty Schubert Culp and friends joining the group.
