Arctic explorer calls frozen north largely a myth
Hjalmar Stefansson, arctic explorer, told an address that the frozen north is mostly barren and lifeless though it holds untapped economic potential. He predicted reindeer meat could rival beef in 26 years and, in 50 years, beer could be replaced. He noted Greenland's southern part is ice covered due to topography, while northern Greenland shows grassy meadows and abundant grazing animals. The coldest measured north of the Arctic Circle was 54 degrees below zero.
