Lower Bread Prices May Come As War-Era Controls Fade
Local bakers and consumers debate the price of bread as wartime controls loosen. C F Altstadt of the Master Bakers association says the final price is tied to production costs, with loaves ranging 20 to 25 ounces and prices from 10 to 15 cents. Wholesale firms argue current wholesale costs support a 10 to 12 cent 20 to 24 ounce loaf, while retailers push 15 cent loaves for 20 ounces. Grocers anticipate further cuts as materials costs fall, and regulators note size rules have loosened since wartime restrictions.
