Mandan Indians Early Culture Recalled by Historian
Mandan, N D April 6 Mandan named Out Where the West Begins and praised for stature among northern Indians by John Fiske. Catlin in the 1840s credited their white blood, while Fiske speculated on Madoc Welsh links and mound builder descent. Noted for fine communal houses, round 40 to 60 foot diameters with earth over a post frame and willow matting walls.

Mandan Village Interiors and Burial Platforms Described
Descriptive notes recount Mandan houses with smoke vents beneath, buffalo robes as doors, and mats and skins forming partitions. Pictoria and quill work decorated interiors while palisades ten feet high surrounded the villages. Elevated burial platforms stood nearby on the prairie, and some Mandan people still live in the area.
