Subisidy clash centers on Minnesota congressman
Washington April 6 The arrest of John A Penton secretary of the Merchant Marine league for criminal libel against Representative Steenerson of Minnesota led to his release on $500 bail. The charge stems from an December article in The American Flag accusing Steenerson of supporting measures to end coolie labor on American ships. Penton sought counsel from Cleveland delaying questioning. Steenerson pressed questions about ship subsidy lobbying by James T McCleary, a former House member. The House special committee continued its investigation into ship subsidy influence.
