Smithsonian brochure traces rise of electric lamp light output
Washington April 3. When electric lights were first marketed about 40 years ago the user had about five candle power per hour for a penny. By 1904 it was one candle power. In 1906 it rose to about three and a half. The next year it reached four candle power for the penny. Today the consumer receives 48 candle power hours with the ordinary 40 watt lamp for one cent.
