Sailor survives ship Golden Gate sinking after California voyage
G F Breithaupt, now 81, is the sole known living survivor of the Golden Gate disaster that sank about a mile from Izantido, Mexico, in 1849. He carried $10,000 in gold dust in the ship’s purser safe, and though the treasure lies at the Pacific bottom, hopes remain for recovery. Breithaupt, a Baden native born October 10, 1813, came to America in 1848, later running a hotel at Ackley, Iowa, and recalling his ordeal in vivid detail.
