Edward M. Morgan, postmaster of New York, was shot in the abdomen on a West 146th Street sidewalk by Erle H. B. Mackey, who then killed himself. Mackey, 41, an Englishman formerly in Boston, had complained of tampered mail at Washington, and investigators deem him insane. Morgan was rushed home for treatment as witnesses described a sudden, fatal sequence ending with Mackey’s suicide.

Promoted for assistant postmaster to postmaster, to succeed William R. Willcox, who became a public service commissioner. Morgan, Republican leader in Washington Heights, survived a stomach wound. doctors now believe the stomach wall was not penetrated. Attacker Erich H. Mackey, a stenographer from 165 Broadway, was identified. Mackey had worked for Hunt, Hill & Betts for about four years. He came from England nine years ago, lived in Boston before moving to New York City. Employers are puzzled by his act. a clue is letters in Mackay’s desk indicating a complaint about undelivered mail to the postmaster. Morgan regained consciousness and said he did not recognize his attacker. An envelope to Miss Anna Mackey at a nursing school in Newburyport, Mass., was found. it was empty. Mackay, son of H. W. B. Mackay of Cambridge, born near Dublin, previously shot a fellow employee over a grievance.
