New York dispatch reports Taft wins the presidency with 208 electoral votes and gains in key states. Hughes is re-elected in New York, Indiana votes Taft, and Nebraska shows Democratic gains. Bryan carried Nevada and Montana, while Lincoln and Omaha show strong Democratic shifts. Shallenberger appears poised for Nebraska governorship.
New Haven reported a sweeping Republican victory as most towns were in with Taft leading by a margin of 38,450. Roosevelt trailed with 113,509 votes and Bryan had 73,149. Debs collected 2,904 and Chafin 2,280. Lilley led over Robertson for governor by 16,004, and Donovan lost in Norwalk in the senate race as Republicans expanded gains.
Lincoln Neb Nov 4 Indications show Democratic candidate Bryan carrying Nebraska and Lincoln. Early returns hint at broad support in state and capital city. Strong name recognition and campaign momentum noted as results trickle in.
November 4 In New Jersey Republicans carry the state in the national contest and dominate the legislature. Seven of ten U S representatives elected are GOP and the senate stands 14 7 with Republicans ahead in the house around 44 16. Everett Colby wins re election to the state senate leading the New Idea faction.
In Ohio Secretary Taft wins his home state with a smaller majority than Roosevelt's four years ago. Democrat Judson Harmon is probably elected governor by about 15,000. City returns show large Democratic gains while rural areas stay Republican. Governor Harris's push for local option affected the vote, with urban centers swinging away from him.
Pennsylvania voted Republican by about 350000, with majorities in Pittsburgh Harrisburg Altoona and other cities for Taft. Roosevelt carried the state in 1904 and Stuart won in 1906. William D. Porter Republican defeated Webster Grim Democrat for the superior court. State remains Republican in the Sixty first Congress.
Illinois backed Taft by about 170000 to 175000 votes and re elected Governor Deneen by 40000 to 45000. Legislature will be 58 Republicans to 34 Democrats in the Senate and 215 to 176 in the House, signaling a strong Republican joint ballot for Hopkins reelection. Speaker Cannon wins District 18. In Kansas Taft leads by about 20000 with Walter R. Stubbs elected governor.
Reporting from multiple states on November 4, voters in Montana, Oklahoma, Nevada, Nebraska, and several other states show Democratic gains or maintained control. Bryan leads nationally with sizable margins in many southern and western states while Taft makes modest gains in others.
Report from 416 districts indicates Republicans 177 seats, Democrats 189, 11 doubtful, 64 incomplete. Taft leads in Wisconsin and Utah, Taft wins Idaho and Rhode Island, Vermont states Taft by 27,000. Taft sweeping several state elections while Taft and Sherman secure Massachusetts statewide results.
Indianapolis dispatch reports Indiana shifted to Taft and Sherman with a 7,000 lead, shrinking the GOP edge. Democrat Omas F. Marshall wins governor by about 12,000, Marion county led by 5,000, Kern’s vice presidential bid faltered as Indianapolis backed Tutt by 700. Kern declined immediate comment.
San Francisco reports Taft swept California with the Republican national ticket, echoing Roosevelt’s 1904 margin. Washington slated to cast its five electoral votes for Taft with Samuel C. Gosgrove winning governor. Oregon shows Taft leading as returns pour in. Michigan governor race remains uncertain amid split tickets. West Virginia hints Taft plurality but governor race tight. Delaware Taft plurality around 3,000 with state ticket favorable except attorney general. Colorado results unclear due to many ballots. New Hampshire remains Republican with governor Quinby elected narrowly. Wyoming votes Taft. Independence party faces defeat while Hearst declines headquarters appearance. Prohibition candidate Chafin predicts 1912 rise for his party.
New York voters reelected Governor Hughes by about 70,000, far short of Taft’s national lead. County results showed Hughes strongest in Democratic districts and weak in standard Republican areas, with Kings County narrowing Chanler’s margin. Taft carried Greater New York by about 5,000 as Republicans dominated statewide returns. Champ Clark was reelected in Missouri. In New York City a mother and son were found dead in an apartment hotel. the mother shot, the son suffocated by gas, with a locked bathroom door noted.
Weather report notes rain in Connecticut with a cold night ahead. Thursday will be fair and colder with strong northwest gales. A disturbance moved from Lake Superior toward the St Lawrence valley, bringing cloudy skies and light snow flurries to eastern lake regions and New England.
New York report shows Henry Chanler ahead in Manhattan and Bronx with 170 833 votes to Hughes 122 768 across missing districts. Brooklyn totals show Hughes leading 68 708 to Chanler 100 950 with Queens and Richmond districts incomplete but Chanler leading in Queens 21 988 to Hughes 16 787 and Richmond 7 591 to 6 081.
