Vacant Seats Spark Russian Parliamentary Tension
In St Petersburg on May 22 the absence of four radical groups from the lower house during the May 20 announcement of the plot against Emperor Nicholas Bay and their refusal to congratulate on the escape drew strong reactions from court and government. The Rossiya dubbed the act openly revolutionary and aligned with London’s social democratic congress, while 55 conservative deputies urged the people to note this disloyalty. Police raids at Tsarskoe Selo uncovered letters from American anarchists and Russian deserters, and Stolypin declined to testify to the unemployed committee.
