New York May 17 Mr Fisher one of the Boer envoys was shown published statements claiming admissions on the steamship to a London employee of a newspaper. Mr Fisher said the story was so in every material particular.

Seattle on May 17 reports the steamship J L Card was fined 100 dollars by Collector Milne for carrying Japanese passengers between Active Pass and Steveston while the vessel was certified as a freighter.
A basement fire at a Van Brunt Street tenement forced all residents from both buildings to flee to the street. Dilon Gunn age 16 Catharine Bhierton 63 and her daughter Kate 16 were burned on hands and body. Fireman Henry Post of Engine Company 104 suffered a severe facial laceration from a falling beam.
San Francisco May 17 F Tilder reports after a third Smithsonian trip the first half of a 15000 piece exhibit valued around 12000 dollars. The collection showcases Philippine manufactures trades arts costumes woods and fibres including the Manila rope fibre from a banana variety. The exhibits will travel to the Pan American Buffalo and then be housed as a Filipino department in the National Museum.
Chicago May 17 The Associated Press directors elected Charles W Isnapp as president and Samuel Bowles as vice president The second vice president is General Harrison Grey Otis Melville E Stone will resign as secretary and general manager. Charles B Diehle was unanimously chosen to succeed him as general manager Lawson declined the presidency and John R Walsh was named treasurer

Joseph Laughrey buys 150 acres of coking coal on Washington run in Franklin township from John Rankin for 65000. The tract, the original Washington tract taken up by George Washington, is to become Laughrey’s mining site with 100 coke ovens and a mining village.
A Rochester stockholders meeting announced that construction on the Rochester to Niagara Falls electric railroad will start once state commission formalities are complete. New York reports say Paris bankers through the Bank of France negotiated a 15 million dollar loan from New York financiers. The loan, to be paid in installments averaging 3 million every two weeks, began negotiations January 7 and involves National City Bank and several foreign banking houses.
A Koping Sweden telegram reports a man fired on the Prins Carl as the Koping passed. A woman screamed from the deck and the killer escaped by boat. Twelve sailors were shot. six including the captain died, others were found in their quarters, one more died, and the murderer is pursued.

Middletown May 1 Henry Bracken of New Haven a brakeman on the Raw Hide freight east bound was badly crushed while attempting to board his train as it pulled out of the station. He slipped and fell beneath wheels suffering mangled legs and possible amputation both legs below the knees. He was taken to New Haven hospital by the 8 37 train.
Bridgeport May 17 laborers in the molding department at Pacific Ironworks ended a strike after receiving all wages due. New workers have been placed in the positions formerly held by the strikers.

Dispatches from Montreal report the harbor board has approved Connors syndicate plans to build a 1,000,000 bushel elevator at Montreal with 2,000,000 bushel storage and attached storehouses. Canadian Inland Transportation Co will run the operation with seven steamers and fourteen barges, aiming to complete by this season's crop. Connors predicts $4,000,000 investment, with freight economics showing strong returns from Duluth to seaboard routes.
Pathfinder and Patterson to sail for Behring Sea next month to survey Alaskan coast from St Michael to Cape Prince of Wales under Captain J Pratt of the Coast and Geodetic Survey. George N. Wiswell of Milwaukee sergeant at arms for the Republican national convention and J. P. Swords of New York arrive in Philadelphia to set up headquarters in Independence Square. Wiswell will hire a clerical staff and later choose 5 000 assistants to manage expected crowds during the convention.

A boiler exploded on a torpedo boat here yesterday in May, causing six fatalities. The incident occurred at St. Peters and involved several crew members. Investigators began examining the vessel and boiler condition to determine the cause.

Clarence Bland, a young Black man, was sentenced to one year in state prison by Judge Elmer in Bridgeport after being convicted of perjury in the criminal superior court. The sentencing occurred this morning following his arrest last Tuesday.
