New York police arrest Edward Pekerz, a Bosnian immigrant, in connection with the murder of Mrs Sarah Rosenberg in Harlem. He allegedly admitted killing her for her money, finding only 12 dollars after the deed. Pekerz, 25, had been living in Brooklyn lodging rooms since the crime, and was employed as a harness maker. The body showed two head wounds and was in Mrs Rosenberg’s home on 101st Street for about four days. Police say he disappeared from his shop the day of the murder and had previously boarded with the victim. Pekerz remained unfazed, asking how long before he is killed, and smiled as photographers surrounded him en route to court.
In Philadelphia on May 1 United Gas Improvement Co shares swung widely on the local exchange. The stock opened at 117 after closing Saturday at 115, dipped to 111 in early trading, then recovered to 117 as activity quieted. The move follows the 75 year lease deal with the city valued at 25 million dollars, which some Philadelphia papers oppose.
May Day strikes may reduce building output this week with 30,000 to 35,000 workers possibly quitting in rotations to press for higher wages. About 25,000 Rockmen and Excavators union members, who demanded a wage scale and recognition of the union from contractors on March 20, have not received a satisfactory reply and remain prepared to walk out.

Bartlett New Hampshire May 1 Fire swept through Cave Mountain House a leading hotel burning the building and its stable causing about 15000 in losses Sparke from the wind fanned the flames several times threatening the Maine Central railroad station and nearby dwellings but all were saved by a bucket brigade The hotel owner E A Stevens carried partial insurance and the blaze was blamed on a defective chimney
Providence May 1 fire at the Household Sewing Machine company plant caused damage estimated at no less than 100000. The blaze started on the first floor, spread to upper stories, and was extinguished after four hours. Watchman Christopher Whitford aboard the second floor reported the explosion and smoke hindered firefighting. The plant, owned by the Seigel-Cooper company of New York, was insured.
In New Haven on May 1, Yale University junior and sophomore classes launched a drive to cover a $5,000 academic deficit. So far $2,000 has been subscribed, with nearly the full amount expected. The plan calls for two middle classes to raise sums and 1.20 from each freshman. Seventy four juniors pledged 25 each.
John Ackerman a well to do farmer in the Stafford district died suddenly at his home last night. He went to his room to obtain some article and did not return. Heart disease was the cause. He was years old and had lived here for forty years. He leaves five sons, three daughters and a number of relatives.

Bennington Vermont May 1 an inquest opened into the death of 21 year old Fred N Bartlett whose body was found in the road in front of the First National Bank at North Bennington. State's Attorney W B Daly directed the inquiry and police investigate whether Bartlett was fatally hurt or murdered at Walloomsac and then transported to North Bennington. Bartlett lived in North Bennington and was unmarried.

A violent daytime clash in Warsaw at Zelazna and Jerozinska streets left thirty one dead and many wounded as troops blocked a workmen’s procession with cavalry and infantry. A separate street fight near Clote and Scanowa caused further casualties as a military patrol fired on the crowd.
