Lewis Morrison who starred in Faust has closed the season in New Haven after a successful run. Actors allege a quarrel with manager Jules Murry in Worcester led to the abrupt shutdown, but Murry calls it imagination. Morrison’s health, worsened by a nervous shock from a private car fire in Maine, prompted the pause. He plans a spring rest and to resume touring with Murry next fall.
Milton Aborn, actor, sues James R Waite for 17000 claiming a three year opera engagement at 150 a week. Aborn says he was discharged after six months with four weeks notice. Defense argues four weeks clause relieves liability. Includes an unrelated shoe shop ad at 73-75 Bank Street.
Washington March 27 Senator Foraker in charge of the Porto Rican bill told the senate that from today he would push the measure to a vote at the earliest moment. Senator Hanna denied a published allegation of a deal with the Republican national committee and urged investigation. The Alaska civil code bill was discussed with licenses for most trades in the district set from 10 to 500 dollars a year. The senate caucus failed to reach harmony on the Porto Rican measure while the house opened debate on the army appropriation bill.
In Santiago a political meeting to nominate candidates for elections broke up in a riot after a color line emerged. Whites fought the predominantly colored faction as police struggled to contain the disorder. Annexation party plans are discussed amid local tension. The Dolphin not visiting Santiago disappoints the American colony.
Chicago industrial subcommission hearings heard from Michael Hovey a Glencoe contractor who denounced unions as harmful to workers families and society. He claimed unions create three classes of workers and foster tramps and penitentiary inmates, calling trades unions the father of trusts and a root of social ills. Rabbi Isaac M Wise Dies After Paralysis Stroke in Cincinnati. He passed away peacefully at 6 PM after delivering a discourse, with his final hours marked by pallor and faintness before transport home.
