Albany March 6 Superintendent Skinner doubts the regents bill to abolish the state department of public instruction can pass. Governor Odell disapproves of interdepartmental discord and favors unification through the board of regents, with legislative limits on their powers. Senator Brown criticizes the regents for life tenure and regional representation concerns. The Stevens bill would abolish the department and transfer duties to the regents, with Skinner and deputies kept on payroll until term ends. A destructive blaze on Sylvan avenue early this morning destroyed two houses owned by John Dillane and his son John J. Dillane the musician. Loss is about $7,000, with only partial insurance. Neighbors alerted firefighters who faced a distant hydrant and saved adjacent structures including the Collins house. The cause remains unknown and the family escaped with little more than the clothes on their backs.
In Washington on March 6 the Democratic senatorial caucus met at 1 o clock and re elected Gorman to his old post as chairman.

Shirley Massachusetts March 6 a west bound freight train on the Fitchburg division of the Boston and Maine railroad broke apart near this place. Dozen cars were derailed and several demolished blocking the westbound track. Eastbound service was delayed two hours with damages estimated at 100 dollars. New Haven March 6 in superior court judge Gager granted a judgment by agreement in favor of John Coughlin against the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad for injuries on the Danbury Special at Sandy Hook last summer. The agreed amount was 100 dollars.
Hartford March 6 Captain Ginty of the Danbury police appeared before the judiciary committee to support a bill allowing dismissed policemen to appeal within thirty days to the superior court. He argued the move would reduce politics influencing the police department.
New Britain March 16 molders on strike at Russell and Herwin's were telegraphed that a national board member will arrive this evening. Strikers report pickets at the shop and claim six unions have joined their ranks since Degzan.
Gilfeather of San Francisco defeated Monroe of New York in Hot Springs Arkansas on March 6. The decision came after Monroe quit due to a badly injured right arm worsened by a boil, with no clear early advantage for Gilfeather.
