New York July 20. The motive for the murder of Joseph Pessina, superintendent at Weidmann’s silk dyeing establishment in Paterson, N J, by Carthbooa Speranza, was revealed when a letter found in Speranza’s pocket and translated shows he acted under Mafia influence. The note claims to kill Pessina for mistreating countrymen and cites “Friends and Comrades” as addressees. Speranza, who killed himself after the shooting, refers to renouncing carnivorous Antericuos and signs as “Your Poor Friend and Companion Carihona Speranza.”
Indians along Hudson Bay report wreckage from Andree exploratory balloon with two men dead and three missing. Contests in Campbell and Kenton counties sparked fights over credentials and a minority report seated Tarvin delegates. Arguments over arbitration rules for contests followed, delaying final decisions.
A Washington man visiting Atlantic City was found by Chief Idridge to be James Conley a clerk in the U.S. Treasury. He had forgotten his name after sun and surf and misidentified his attire. Conley recognized himself when told by a Washington acquaintance and is reported well today.
News from Tacoma dated July 20 states upwards of twenty deaths near the Yukon river mouth, traced to fierce gales.
