London dispatches describe uncertain relief for Ladysmith with heavy Boers shelling near Natal. General Warren was rumored killed, but no confirmation. cabinet met to plan legislation and the queen's speech while British troops held key positions along the Spion Kop area and Acton Homes.
General Buller reports from Spearman Camp that Lord Dundonald led mounted troops to action west of Acton Homes, capturing several kopjes. Field Cornet Mearlbram and 20 Boers died, 15 prisoners taken, two British soldiers killed and two wounded. Consul Hal arrives at Cape Town and prepares to depart for Pretoria.
In New York Mrs nk Roessner of Williamsburg attempted suicide by ingesting Paris Green. Her husband found her and tried to carry her to a hospital five blocks away, but she resisted. The outcome is uncertain as she fights for her life.
New Haven January report says Thomas Kennedy private secretary to Lord Mayor Tallon and involved with the Parnell fund died in Ireland of typhoid fever. Also: a bank near M, Indiana was robbed today as robbers escaped.
Howard P. Okle, once a New York alderman, says a London cable to the Journal and Advertiser describes a quarrel over poker with two Englishmen at the Cecil Hotel. He says he knocked both men out after a rattling melee while in evening dress, his clothes splattered with blood. his wife is sister to Mrs Roland B. Molineux.
Berlin dispatch reports a closed chapter of the Order of the Black Eagle held in a castle with Emperor William as grand master. Notable participants included Prince Hohenlohe Count von Waldersee Princes Albrecht and Nicolaus of Wartemberg and General von Bulow. The event featured a throne procession, new members initiated, and the emperor center stage.
SCHENECTADY New York Central and Hudson officials announce a plan to spend 40000 dollars in Schenectady for abolishing grade crossings and constructing a new railroad station. Work to begin early in spring. A Shanghai dispatch reports Russia will loan Korea 12000000 dollars, with 5000000 to be paid immediately after Korea sought funds from Japan.
North Brookfield on January 19 reports a brutal tragedy in which Martin Bergin, famed Boston National League catcher, killed his wife and two children with an axe and then slashed his son's throat and his own with a razor before dying by suicide. Neighbors found the bodies. insanity is blamed. Bergin, about 32, had been a prominent figure in baseball and had a history of erratic behavior and disputes with teammates.

A decision from the Internal Revenue Service in New Haven states physicians who prescribe and sell patients whiskey brandy wine or other alcoholic liquor not compounded into medicine must pay a special tax as a retail liquor dealer even if the liquor is prescribed as medicine. The ruling hinges on medical use not exempting the sale from liquor tax.

Liberty lodge A O U W has paid 2000 dollars to the widow and four children of the late Michael Thelan of Dublin street. The state association of letter carriers plans its Hartford convention on Washington's Birthday. Prudential staff dined at Scovill house hosted by local superintendent T T Forman.
A morning head on collision near Smith and Griggs on the trolley line left multiple injuries. No 72 southbound and No 60 northbound cars crashed. Willis Foster and Wharton Grubb were badly hurt, with Foster suffering a broken ankle and rib. Nelson, a carpenter, was severely cut and shaken. Beatrice Burnes and Miss Purpes among others were injured by flying glass. Nelson's condition later worsened with fears of fatal injury. Miss Barnes reported seriously hurt.
Washington January 19. The twelfth census of agriculture will gather data before the general enumeration where profitable. A nursery schedule follows cranberry and irrigation schedules, listing about 4 000 nurseries. Each known nursery will receive a local list to add to or correct and return promptly to complete a satisfactory nursery record.
Through Consul Ho Yow the Chinese Six companies in San Francisco pledge to help police end the Chinatown conflict. They subscribe 17,500 dollars to reward arrests of murderers and guarantee protection for Six companies members from Highlander vengeance.
In Lexington Virginia a family scene turned alarming as two older children carried and restrained an infant during a butcher play. The baby was nearly cut in the mock slaughter, rescued by the mother, and sustained a broken arm and shoulder dislocation in the fracas. The incident involved Charles A. Alexander's infant son and his siblings.
