Manila reports a January 8 battle in the Sudlon mountains where a Nineteenth Infantry battalion fought insurgents, routed them, and seized a smooth bore cannon and rifles while fortifications were destroyed and four Americans were wounded. General Flores moved to rendezvous with 100 men at Hanningan. Captain Benson’s force dispersed them. Americans also occupied Magallanes, Cavite, capturing twenty insurgents including a colonel with no American losses.
N K Goss a leading merchant of Edinburg was murdered by burglars during a burglary at his store. The alarm connected to his home alerted neighbors who found him mortally wounded after three hours. Three burglars fled toward Palmyra and a posse pursued them.
The Journal and Advertiser reports a dispute over Dwight L Moody’s official biography. Rev J Wilbur Chapman is preparing one for a Philadelphia publisher while Will R Moody plans another for a Chicago house. The Moody family favors Will, citing the evangelist’s wish for his son to write the biography.

The group originally had twenty five travelers en route to the Kiondike over the Edmonton trail in the fall of 1807.
The Ohio Society of California formed a committee to organize a fitting launching event for the battleship Ohio under construction at Union Iron Works. President McKinley is expected to attend along with Governor Nash and other Ohio dignitaries.
The Norwegian steamer Hirundo reports she carries the crew of the British steamer Edinmoor, which sailed from Pensacola December 8 via Norfolk December 18 for Amsterdam and was abandoned. The Hirundo passed Dungeness today en route to Antwerp with the rescued crew.

Columbus Drake of Mattewan New Jersey the oldest resident of Benmouth county has died at age 100 years and 11 months. He never married and lived with his sister who is nearing the century mark.
O Donovon Rossa Irish patriot and agitator visited Bridgeport last night calling on Undertaken John Cullinan and Colonel T J Murphy. He left saying he would take the 9 30 train to New Haven but did not. Murphy and others were disappointed. Rossa was bound for Boston for a lecture and is described as a Boer sympathizer.
Hot Springs Arkansas January 13 Colonel J H Wood a nationally known showman died last night of cancer complicated by paralysis He built and ran numerous museums across the country and established Daly's theater in New York He operated shows in Denver San Francisco and other western cities His latest venture was a large scale aquarium on wheels he toured the nation on a special train with his show
New York report says Robert Kyenst a saw filer living alone in a basement died of voluntary starvation after New Year’s Day isolation. He refused customers, talked to himself, and shouted until neighbors forced entry. He died at Bellevue Hospital two hours after admission.
A Wilder & Co cloth factory fire in Hallowell Maine caused about 75000 dollars in losses. Two firemen were badly injured by the blast and Major Safford was knocked down but unharmed. The plant, a longtime oil cloth maker, was insured for 30000. The cause remains unknown and many workers face unemployment as the business season wanes.

New Haven January 13 Colonel Timothy Callahan has asked Captain Oscar Bradley to resign or retire, Bradley refuses and appeals to Governor Lounsbury. Callahan also accuses Bradley of drunkenness at Niantic last August, with adjutant-general Van Keuren to review. Governor and adjutant general have not yet ruled, prompting speculation. El Paso January 13 a condemned man is to be executed at Juarez's Quartel by a shot inside the prison walls. An admission fee of 25 will be charged for witnesses, paid to the condemned man’s widow.
In Fridgeport on January 13 John Moriarty and others were fined $50 for selling oleomargarine. Dairy Commissioner Noble provided the evidence in the city court case.

Three young women were uninjured after a sleigh accident on Mast Main near Hall Upson. Mrs Keough’s sale opens this evening with various discounts. The Ladies' auxiliary, A. O. HL, celebrated their fourth anniversary with a program in Red Men's hall. A committee was appointed.
Jeremiah Kiely aged 57 died at his home 38 Walnut Street this morning. He leaves three sons Jeremiah Joseph of this city and Michael of Newark Ohio and four daughters Nellie Margaret Mrs Thomas Ryan of Brooklyn NY and Mrs Frank Sazorus of Sandusky Ohio. The remains will go to Sandusky for burial under Undertaker Mulville. Mrs Mary Sullivan’s funeral was held from Beacon Street to St Thomas Church with mass by Father Crowley. Bearers were Morris Neonan Timothy O’Rourke P.B. Sacral William Robinson Edward Fitzgerald and Daniel Kenneally. Floral offerings included two bouquets from Mr and Mrs E J Lewis. Interment was in St Joseph’s Cemetery.
