Chicago December 31 reports the Iroquois theatre blaze during the Bluebeard premiere left at least six hundred dead and many more injured missing. Victims include families, children, and well known locals while rescue work and tributes unfold amid citywide mourning and an ongoing fire department inquiry.
The leaders of the theatrical syndicate including Al Hayman Marcus Klaw and Abram Erlanger sat in New Amsterdam theater past midnight receiving Chicago telegrams about the Iroquois theater disaster. They face questions over Mr Bluebeard and the tour production which began in Pittsburgh on September 28.
At a New York meeting of the National Amateur Skating Association B Clifford Dunn resigned as secretary and Francis Clarke was appointed to fill the vacancy. Peter Sinnirt d sought reinstatement but his letter was passed over by the new board. The annual figure skating championship will be held at St Nicholas's rink and the national amateur speed skating championship was awarded to Pittsburgh for February at the Duquesne Garden rink.
Secret service agents investigate a mysterious blast at Midvale steel works in Nicetown. The charge into the shell remains unexplained, with some fearing conspirators aimed to damage a battleship. News from Philadelphia Herald dispatch notes the event recently became public.
New York city board of health adopts resolutions forbidding any police or fire department member to remain on duty while infectious with tuberculosis. An investigation found seventeen members of the police afflicted with the disease.
Police Commissioner Greene praises Inspector George McClusky for his detective bureau leadership during the retiring commissioner's term. Special commendations noted for the barrel and ripper cases and the bureau's administration.

Arthur Riley Lyman of Yale Medical School senior class died at Massachusetts General Hospital following a surgical operation. His home was in Lowell, Massachusetts.
New York reports rapid charity response to the Chicago disaster with multiple benefits announced. S.8. Shubert pledged proceeds from upcoming performances of The Pit in Chicago and Winsome Winnie in New York to aid sufferers. The Red Feather company also intends to organize a relief event.
Manila dispatch reports the United States gunboat Quiros as aground on a reef off the coast of France with details remaining unclear as authorities assess salvage options.

New York reports the Association of Master Builders in Paterson has declared a city lockout slated to start January 4. About 17 200 workers in Paterson and nearby areas will lose their jobs as a result. The dispute arose from the unions' refusal to arbitrate differences.

Henry Matthews former mayor of Waterbury and Watertown Southbury resident for fifteen years died at his home after a four month heart illness. He was 78, lived in Mitchell mansion on South, and was linked to local manufacturing interests. Survived by his wife son Charles Detroit and daughter Mrs Ireland of Detroit. He was a Democrat and once represented the fifth senatorial district at Hartford.
Frank Leonard of East Main alleges he was struck by a member of a Henegy Club on Gran a Street Christmas afternoon. He remained in a stupor, recalling little as police investigated the assault near Barlow's establishment and Canal Street.
In Groton Connecticut on December 31, bricklayers plasterers and masons who are members of the International Bricklayers Union of America were in deliberation with the site foreman. The union warned that if three plasterers who belong to the Operative Association do not join the International Union the strike will widen. Norcross Bros contractors hold the Plant estate contract and officials say a report of the interview has been submitted to the head of the concern in We Mass and an answer is expected.
News from John Dwyer of 50 South Street reports he has been missing since Saturday night. A search along the Naugatuck river yielded no clues, with his wife seeking publicity to spark a tip. Also noted is a Bridgeport legal verdict of not guilty in a malpractice case against Dr Wheeler. A lost gold clover leaf pin offers a reward.
