In Mooristown New Jersey on December 31 12 year old Hertha Haines vanished from home and was found at the Butler place near a deserted hotel with injuries after confrontations with Sloan a known desperado. Constable Adams fought him and Hertha’s father Charles R Haines joined the clash restraining Sloan who tried to kill the girl. Sloan was captured tied and jailed at Mount Holly while his wife was locked up as an accomplice. Hertha was severely maltreated and unlikely to recover.
