Mrs Mary M. Rogers was hanged at the state prison in Windsor Vermont today for the murder of her husband Marcos on August 13 1902. The execution took place following legal proceedings and established death penalty sentence.
At 1 13 this afternoon Mra Rogers was executed after two reprieves and a final Supreme Court denial. Few witnessed the hanging as Vermont law limits attendance. Officials declared her dead at 1 27 pm and she remained composed as she mounted the gallows. Deputy Sheriff Mc Auley released the trapdoor after the sentence was read.
The 1902 Bennington case recounted shows Mary Mabel Rogers, age 19, convicted of first degree murder for killing her husband Marcus Rogers with chloroform aided by Leon Perham and Estella Bates. They dumped the body in the Walloomene River to mask the crime and attempted to collect life insurance before marrying Maurice Knapp. Perham confessed and received life imprisonment while Rogers faced the gallows under Vermont law with a possible pardon.
General Stephen D. Lee of the United Confederate Veterans has written to President Roosevelt thanking him for a paragraph in his message urging the government to care for Confederate graves, especially those who died in northern prisons. Lee says the paragraph is exceedingly gratifying to him personally.
Fire in Buffalo early today gutted the Union Dry Dock shops and the Erie Railroad transfer and freight house on Ganson Street. Loss is estimated at $200,000. New York December 8 Thomas F Kry an who bought control of the Equitable Life Assurance society testified as the first witness before the insurance Investigating committee. He bought Hyde stock paying 2 500 000 and said no one contributed to the payment. He claimed the board would be held by voting trustees of high character and that his aim was to prevent a receivership and a market panic. He said Harriman offered to participate but he refused.

Portland caldron of obituary reports Senator John Hipple Mitchell died at his home after weeks of decline following his fraud conviction over government land schemes. Born in 1839 in Pennsylvania, he served as Portland city counsel, state senator, and multiple terms in the United States Senate before his downfall. His wife remained in Paris, and his son John T. Mitchell Jr. lives in Minneapolis. Lieutenant Hiram Mitchell, U.S.A., is another son.
