Washington reports 294 postmasters appointed during the congressional recess will be submitted to the Senate for confirmation this week. Hartford armory housing City Battalion and naval units closed to the public yesterday. Only commissioned officers and the 1st regiment band with prior rehearsal access were admitted, despite plans of the City Battalion Indoor Baseball association to use the facility. Colonel Schulze and Armorer McDonald upheld rules issued by a former quartermaster general, enforcing Sunday access limits and complicating the baseball committee’s meeting plans.

Secretary of the Navy annual report highlights armament plans

The secretary of the navy released his annual report noting 18 new warships requested by Congress, armor price issues, and praise for actions at Santiago. It calls for three armored cruisers, twelve gunboats, and three protected cruisers, with coppering and high speed. It also urges recognition of officers in the Santiago actions and broader naval reforms including armor procurement and naval reserve growth.

Waterbury St Patrick's week of devotion and police officer tribute

The forty hours devotion opened at St Patrick's church with a morning procession of church societies and many visiting priests. A Hardware Hall association meeting presented a token to Officer Thomas Cronan, engraved in honor of his service at St Patrick's fair, now on display at Michael Clancy's Bank Street window. Patrick Mulligan, 77, died at his son's home on 122 Charles Street. a Civil War veteran who lost an arm in 1883, he had lived in Waterbury since 1885. Funeral at St Patrick's Church Wednesday with interment at St Joseph's cemetery.

Building notes outline Oakville church and local structures

The St Johns R society of Oakville plans a new church with undecided plans. Architect Joseph A. Jackson drafts heating by steam. Local builders lay out shelving for a cigar store, plaster for John Ryan’s house, and masons work for E H Allen residence. Plumbing by Barrett Higgins and John Ashton covers multiple stores and new houses. H W Keeler drums in heaters for several customers. New houses and renovations are described for several properties on Hillside, Baldwin, West Main, and Highland avenues. Architect J A Jackson also works on St Thomas church basement finishing for Sunday school and meeting room. Waterbury Manufacturing Co additions are under way with brick and iron roof construction. Berlin Trion Bridge Co handles iron work for a potential new factory.

French Painter Chartran Arrives With McKinley Picture

New York reports artist M Chartran arrived aboard La Champagne from Havre. He says the painting of President McKinley signing the protocol is finished and will reach New York in about three weeks. Ordered by H C Frick, the work draws high interest from collectors and officials.
