In Portsmouth New Hampshire August 24 President Roosevelt's role as crisis mediator dominates the peace conference between Russia and Japan. He presses for mutual concessions and seeks a final settlement while emissaries meet in Berlin and Tokyo.
Father J. J. Curran of Holy Saviour church visited President Roosevelt at Oyster Bay after being urged to talk with him during the August 10 speech to the Demperance society or mine workers. Curran, close to President Mitchell during the 1902 mine workers' strike, has long spoken at mass meetings urging union membership and is well informed about the miners' condition.
Des Moles Aug 24 reports the body of B. F. Elbert a millionaire found near the North river by Fort Moluex. His team remained with the carriage as the riverbank scene suggested potential suicide or foul play amid a life of wealth and varied ventures. Elbert was one of the town’s largest insured individuals with a fortune over half a billion.
Police intervened and arrested the proprietors managers and referees of an alleged wrestling tent in Stamford. The two principals were Arthur Gotthelf of Brooklyn and Joseph Prokes of Stamford. They appeared before Judge Thaw in city court for a hearing.
On August 24 Dover marks the thirtieth anniversary of Captain Matthew Webb’s channel crossing from Admiralty pier to the Dallas sands, a 22.5 mile swim in 21 hours 45 minutes, as three would-be successors begin from nearby under good conditions. Miss Annette Kellerman, T W Burgess, and Horace Mow set out though Kellerman soon faced seasickness and halted after six miles.

Miss Sorat Onwood Hagley a mental healer who taught Mrs Mary Baker Eddy her first lessons in healing died at her Amesbury home aged 81. Hagley had been blind three years. Eddy reportedly resided in Amesbury about thirty years ago and learned from Hagley during a year and a half in her home. Eddy later developed the Christian Science system. Hagley’s successor or views did not influence Eddy's later principles.
Workmen digging a new street along Ser centieth Street near the East River uncovered an old cellar and a stash of copper pennies from the George II era. Italians and other laborers swarmed the site, and the discovery sparked a lively scramble as English pennies appeared in the market overnight.
Reports from Yokohama dated August 8 and San Francisco August 24 describe a growing anti American Chinese boycott. Washington Aug 24 Officials from Justice and Interior released parts of the Chickasaw school warrant evidence implicating Senator J R Burton of Kansas. The records allege warrants totaling about 10 000 were paid to Burton and his brother since March 1901, with payments to J R Burton beginning after he took office. Z T Burton allegedly profited as the conspirator’s front while never appearing before the interior department.

Coroner's exam shows workers warned for nearly an hour before Meyers department store collapse on August 8 in Albany. Foreman John Mitchell and others knew Pier No 9 was crumbling as they labored to shore the building. Five minutes before the crash the supervisor left to warn workers above. All escaped except Mitchell who was injured. Investigation continues.
