New York acknowledges severe cash strain as bond sales to the public slump after contractors sold bonds below par. About $1,000,000 is on hand to cover roughly $4,000,000 in obligations. Contractors threaten to halt work, delaying new contracts until market relief or October tax due date.
Harrisburg reports identify eighteen individuals connected to the 18 million Capitol project irregularities. The final commission findings urge criminal or civil action by the attorney general and governor, naming Sanderson Huston Lewis Shumaker Snyder Fradenberg Sullone Harris Bord Caneel Payne Weter Kinsman Boll eau Neuderer Town and the International Manufacturing and Supply Co. as involved. The panel cites goods sold to the state at a large profit.
Robert R. Gill, cashier of Stapleton National Bank in Stapleton Staten Island, is arrested by U S authorities on charges of a roughly 12000 shortage. Discovered by a bank examiner, the disclosure led to his bail release and cooperation with officials to straighten accounts. The bank’s capital and surplus are reported intact. Gill remains in U S custody.
Robert Allan Pinkerton head of the Pinkerton Detective Agency died at sea aboard the steamer Bremen on August 32 while traveling to Germany for health reasons with Florence Sullivan. Born in 1848 in Dundee Illinois, he studied at Notre Dame and led the agency founded by his father Allan Pinkerton alongside his brother William A Pinkerton of Chicago.

Police and Superintendent Mor ria and officers Hayes and Brickel brought him to the Brookside home after locating him about 7 oclock this morning.
Government officials doubt a Honolulu report that Laysan Island has disappeared from the ocean surface. Luke C Olsen’s captain’s tale prompted cautious interest. Charts show Laysan Inland rising sea grass with some land above sea level, inhabited and having a small landing dock.
South Norwalk August 17 The condition of Al MacCormac the automobile victim at Norwalk hospital was about the same today and there is no immediate danger to life according to physicians.
Washington reports Senator Dick Jof Obie, advocate for militia pay, pressing for higher naval and army pay. He met War Navy and Treasury reps on a joint bill to raise pay, aiming to bolster enlisted conditions and the service outlook. Brigadier General William Du all bans recruitment proselyting to curb biased enlistment and discontent within the army.
New Haven August 17 The state rifle team assigned to the national marksmen match at Camp Perry will assemble at Springfield railroad station this evening. They report to Maj Eben E Hill Jr of the ordnance department and then travel to the middle west. Team captain Major Hill coach Artificer Joseph A Derby spotter Captain C E Smith and markmen Major Ernest L Isbell lead the squad.
Kansas City reports Wa bash passenger train No 9, two rear cars overturned near Randolph, ten miles from Kansas City. Five people were injured though none seriously. The accident occurred as the engine tender wheels left the track during rain and a rush to make up time.
In Sonman Pa a cage with eight miners rose to the top of the tipple suddenly due to a presumed machinery defect. Five men were killed after falling 400 feet to the shaft bottom. The deceased are John McAllister Oscar Groki Ralph Richy Adam Kummko Russell Hollers and additional names incomplete in report.
The annual state convention of the C T A U will meet at Torrington City Hall Monday and Tuesday with a solemn high mass Sunday at St Francis church. Delegates from Torrington and Winsted attend, and events include a reception, a banquet, and an afternoon baseball game with Winsted T A and B. Board meetings and officer elections follow, with next field day location to be chosen. Barber Valentine Hess shot his wife and killed himself in Seacliffe S A. Mrs Hess is said to be in critical condition.
John King returned today from a two week vacation in Goshen. Cyrus Thompson was arrested today by Superintendent Beach and Officer Dowling for intoxication on Bank Street. Lilian Wheatley four months died at 58 Ml Street with funeral set for 2 PM tomorrow at Calvary Cemetery. Fulton’s American band gave a concert at North Square. crowd mixed reaction as square proved unsuitable. A large crockery pile shattered plate glass, causing a racket and drawing a big crowd.
Edward F Lavelle was arrested by tax collector Edward W Kneen on a body writ for failing to pay a $1.50 property tax on land in the south end in Lavalle's name. Lavalle reportedly told the collector to place a ten on the property and was taken to Bridgeport jail despite having money to pay. Counsel reportedly advised Lavalle not to pay the tax.
A four story warehouse and factory building in Brooklyn burned, forcing several hundred workers out of jobs. The blaze on Fulton street caused an estimated $200,000 in losses and four firefighters were overcome by toxic gas during suppression. The building housed the New York and Baltimore Coffee and several manufacturing firms.
