Springfield notices that Thompson Stickle's design for a monument to Abraham Lincoln’s mother Nancy Hanks will be erected over her grave in Spencer County Indiana. The Nancy Hanks Lincoln Monument association led by Governor Mount selects Culver to build using granite from the national Lincoln monument and the receiving vault. Victor Col. Aug 15 Arthur Taylor and George Featherstone nine years old are under arrest charged with causing the Midland terminal passenger train wreck east of Independence and attempting to wreck the Florence and Cripple Creek train at Bull Hill yard. They diverted a switch causing the passenger engine to crash into freight cars injuring two passengers and destroying about forty thousand dollars in property. They were caught while attempting a second wreck. Their stated motive was to see a real big railroad wreck.
Berkley Calif Aug 15 To the University of California comes the honor of having its graduates among the first school teachers appointed to perform the task of Americanizing the Philippines. Miss Anna J Neale of San Diego Ernest Warner Oliver of Los Angeles and Maxwell L McCullough of Irvington all graduates of the state university with the class of 1900 were appointed by Fred Watkinson superintendent of public instruction for the Philippines through Judge William H Taft chairman of the Philippine commission.
