Kiwanis Club Meeting Reviews Regional Cooperation Plan

Last week's Civitan Club gathering at Valle Crucis School for Girls featured a dinner and a program by Civitan J. P. Burke and W. H. Gragg. J. Hampton Rich of Winston-Salem proposed a cross county goodwill tour along the Boone Trail highway to link Blowing Rock Linville Wilkesboro and Winston-Salem with the Piedmont and Forsyth County fair plans, plus a monument map unveiling.

Blowing Rock School to Open September 19

The Blowing Rock consolidated school will open September 19 with elementary grades and high school work to tenth grade under Superintendent G C Robbins. Elementary teachers include Hattie Greer Addie Sale Pearle Webb and Louise Icenhour. High school taught by A E Mercer and Rupert Gillett.

Wreckage of Old Glory Found No Trace of Crew

The Atlantic recovered waterlogged wreckage from Old Glory six days after it set course for Rome. No sign of Lloyd Bertaud J D Hill or Philip A Payne was found. Experts cling to a faint hope they escaped in a rubber boat and were picked up by a fishing vessel without radio.

Bennett Balloons Air Over Watauga In Race

Two balloons entered in the Gordon Bennett balloon race released in Detroit passed over Watauga County Sunday. one headed toward Lenoir and the other toward Wilkesboro. Eleven of fifteen entrants were forced down in the Carolinas, four landed in Georgia, and a pilot near York, South Carolina said his balloon rose to 27 000 feet over western North Carolina.

Ashe Farmers Buy Cattle

W E McNeill of Jefferson returns from the middle west with five carloads of cattle unloaded at Shoans Tennessee. Most of the cattle are expected to be purchased by Ashe county citizens to feed on the abundant hay and feedstuffs in the area.

At Geneva Germany's foreign minister Gustave Stresemann announced acceptance of the compulsory arbitration clause of the world court phrasing, pledging to lead in peace and urging broader economic cooperation. Miss Dave Triplett Visits Valle Crucis in Matney

The Epworth League staged a notable pageant titled The Prodigal Son drawing a large crowd. Miss Dora Wallace from Elizabeth ton Tennessee visited her mother in Matney this weekend. N R Jones of Shell Creek Tennessee opened a general merchandising business here. The Matney school honor roll for the second month lists students across grades from Lillie Baird to Floyd Baird with several other names.

Grand Jury Reports on County Home Jail and Courthouse

The grand jury submitted a full term report to Judge McElroy noting the county home is clean but requires repairs including a faulty upstairs toilet, fire damage, roof leaks, and guttering. They urge drainage work, floor refinishing, and a two-car jail garage while praising the jail’s cleanliness and inmate treatment. Local Red Cross Chapter Reorganized in Watauga County

The Watauga chapter of the American Red Cross, inactive since the war, was revived at a Daniel Boone hotel meeting called by Miss Myers national Red Cross representative. New officers include Chairman R C Rivers and Vice Chairman I G Greer with plans for home nursing classes in Cove Creek Valle Crucis and Appalachian State Normal and a county wide effort during the November 11 to 25 roll call to recruit members paying one dollar.

J B Dick and Company to Open Store Here

J B Dick and Company of Pennington West Virginia, operator of a chain of 5 10 and 25 cent stores, has leased the new W Ralph Winkler building adjoining the Jones block and will open an up to date store here late this month. The first floor will house the store and the second floor will have apartments for two or more families. The move follows J B Dick's visit to Boone where he praised the area and arranged a long term lease. The opening is expected to boost Boone's business district.

Cove Creek High Swells Rural School Enrollment

Doctor Newman visits the county for six weeks offering free dental care to school children aged six to thirteen. Cove Creek high school building nearing completion in about two weeks with 360 enrolled, the largest rural school in the county. Measles and diphtheria affect several schools. two diphtheria deaths reported. Red Cross nurse Miss Myers works to organize chapters. Wantuga Dairy Picnic to Feature Dr. Clarence Poe Address

The Wantuga Farmers Dairy Picnic will be held at Beaver Dam on September 24. Dr. Clarence Poe editor of the Progressive Farmer will speak on Dairy Outlook for 1928 with other speakers from State College Raleigh and John W. Goodman Western North Carolina district agent. The afternoon offers hog calling, horseshoe pitching and pony rides with F R Farham dairy specialist in charge.

Confederate Reunion Planned in Boone September 22 23

The remaining members of Camp Nimrod Triplett UCV call for a reunion in Boone at Appalachian State Normal School buildings on September 22 and 23 1927. They invite any local Union soldiers to attend and note this could be the final gathering as many Lee and Jackson followers have already passed. Com. E J Norris.

Health Crusade Sees North Carolina Schools Win Honors

County Superintendent Smith Hagaman reports 270 NC school classes earned national health education pennants from the Modern Health Crusade aided by Christmas Seals. Boone, Watauga County, led with a pennant. the program promotes hygiene, nutrition, sleep, and preventive practices to fight tuberculosis.

Typhoon and tidal wave devastate Kiushin island locales

A combined typhoon and tidal wave struck Kiushin, Japan, on Tuesday causing heavy loss of life and property damage. Reports indicate more than 100 deaths in Jumanato and an unconfirmed claim of up to one thousand fatalities in Kumafioto.
