Governor Angus W. McLean proclaims Thursday November 29 as Thanksgiving Day for North Carolina. He urges observance with gratitude, charity to orphans, and unity beyond differences, thanking God for blessings and urging public expression of thanks and divine guidance. The proclamation is dated November 12, 1928, in Raleigh.
Mr Hagaman observes year to year changes in the county. The wheat industry has faded while corn is poor this year. Meadows overflow with haystacks, cattle and sheep are scarce, and trucking crops like cabbage and potatoes rise in importance. Roads improve, but other roads remain a need.
Funeral services for Mrs. Milton Bronson were held November 7 at the Blowing Rock Baptist church with Rev. Hicks and Rev. Moser officiating. Burial followed in Blowing Rock cemetery. Surviving are her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Knight, sister Corein Knight, and brothers Frank Knight and Fred Austin. The needful text notes revival services at area churches and visits by relatives from New Hampshire and Charlotte.
John Early a 54 year old North Carolina mountaineer once famed for escapes from leper colonies is declared recovered by the U S Public Health Service. His leprosy is arrested and his case cited as a modern medicine triumph.
Thanksgiving morning service at Cove Creek Baptist Church on November 29 at 11 o'clock. Dr Will Gordon will deliver the sermon titled Some Special Reasons Why We Are Obliged to be Thankful. A free will offering will be taken for the Baptist Orphanage at Thomasville.
A Palo Alto dispatch reports Herbert Hoover is expected to spend his vacation in St. Petersburg Florida. Three of the city's finest homes have been offered to the president elect and his family along with an entire wing of the Royal hotel for their stay.
The Thomasville Baptist orphanage will be renamed Mills Baptist Orphanage by the State Baptist convention in session at High Point. The name honors John H. Mills, founder and first superintendent for ten years beginning November 11, 1885, with approval pending by North Carolina authorities.
North Carolina spent at least 100 million dollars in car operation last year, according to Coleman W. Roberts of the Carolina Motor Club. The American Automobile Association places the average motorist at 229 dollars for operation and maintenance in 1927, with costs broken into parts, tires, fuels and lubricants, and labor.
New York reports detail the Vestris sinking with 328 aboard 129 passengers. Rescue ships bring survivors to port as bodies are identified and families reunite. Capt William Carey and radio operator Michael J O Loughlin perished. Representative William A Oldfield dies after operation.
The Southern Baptist missionary Dr Vines will lead revival meetings at the Baptist church starting Sunday Dec 2. Cottage prayer meetings are planned next week and a combined prayer and Thanksgiving offering will support the orphanage.
Boone Civitan Club met at the Blackburn hotel with about twenty members. Mrs. Smith Hagaman spoke on child welfare noting 33 percent of county school children were undernourished and urged a hot lunch program at Demonstration school. The club planned lunchroom details with the Parent-Teacher Association and agreed to aid Christmas gift distribution with other groups. Members planned to attend the Carolinas Association meeting in Salisbury, aiming for the highest attendance prize.
Mrs Florence Burt McAllister of Salem New Jersey identified a skeleton found in the woods near Salem as her husband Frank missing since June 5. She recognized him by bridgework and gold teeth in the skull, noting the remains had hands and feet tied with clothing and rope.
The North Carolina General Assembly will convene with a markedly larger Republican presence. The 1929 legislature will feature many new names, with prominent figures such as W. M. Parson and J. M. Broughton among the returning or familiar figures, signaling a shift in power dynamics and leadership.
