Washington May 21 President Coolidge issued an executive order extending federal prohibition powers to state county and municipal officers. Assistant Secretary Andrews says local officers will join the federal staff, likely as dollar a year, to augment dry enforcement by thousands. The plan, first proposed by the California prohibition administrator, aims to place officers under federal authority and begin in California.

In Memphis on May 20 the 20th general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South concluded with a consecration service led by Bishop Warren A. Candler. Delegates backed expanded lay representation and trimmed the missionary board, while passing resolutions condemning divorce, moving pictures, whiskey, and theater.
In Statesville on May 20 a collision between an Essex coach carrying Mrs W B Council of Hickory and her niece Mrs Harrington and a Ford car left Mrs Council with slight cuts and bruises. Two Ford occupants are patients in Davis Hospital.

Brisco Griffith aged about 20 of Huntdale Mitchell county died Sunday morning when his automobile plunged over an embankment two miles from Little Switzerland. Miss Bertie Wilkie Spruce Pine hurt none, escaped after leaping from the car and catching a snag ten feet down.

Sparta reports S J Hicks confessed slayer of Jack Jarrell of Surry County was freed on $4000 bond to appear in Alleghany Superior Court. A drinking spree banjo pistols and a dispute over liquor followed a social at a home near Eunice post office leading to the homicide.

Chapel Hill May 21 Governor A W McLean urged the University of North Carolina graduating class to remain in the state. He said residents have better prospects here over the next 25 years and stressed that taxpayers funded much of their education as North Carolina needs young workers to develop its resources. He noted strides in 25 years but warned real progress remains to be made.

Washington May 25 The judiciary committee of the House unanimously dismissed all charges against Judge Isaac M Meekins of the eastern district of North Carolina The subcommittee reported nothing impeachable had been alleged after a careful review by Daniel F Hickey and the committee
The report shows North Carolina paid $101,193,717.44 and $121,688,013.00 in cigarette taxes for the first ten months of fiscal years 1925-26. National cigarette tax totals for the same ten months were $183,424,153 in 1925 and $207,701,615 in 1926.
May 25 Jokio Japan report Mount Tokkachi in central Hokkaido erupted after a long quiet period. About 100 people were confirmed dead and 200 injured as mud and lava swept across valleys and rice fields. Around 1000 farmers are missing amid floods and landslides in a major disaster.
