Walter Williams, famed newspaper figure, began as a Missouri country printer and built a model for journalism education. In 1908 he founded the first journalism school at the University of Missouri and later became university president while retaining deanship.
Congress funded research at the Federal Bureau of Standards revealing a five cent per pound method to obtain xylose from cottonseed hulls. The sugar known as xylos is abundant in plant fibers and does not add fat when consumed, potentially aiding cotton farmers while challenging traditional sugar growers. Oil demand grows for palm, olive, linseed, tung, and coconut oils, with new germ technology promising coconut oil extraction without pressure.
The Baltimore physician Dr William Welch is praised as the Dean of American Medicine for founding medical research methods in the United States. He pioneered preventive medicine and helped shape public health systems, asserting the physician's duty to help prevent disease.
The Boone Demonstration School ends its term today. At 10:30 the seventh grade presents graduation exercises with Attorney Ira T. Johnston of Jefferson delivering the address.
The Tom Thumb miniature golf course on Main Street Boone opens Saturday at 7 30 pm. It features eighteen holes with par 42, hazards, lighting by twenty 300 watt lamps, and clubs balls score cards provided. The Farthings own and operate the venture with management by the Tom Thumb Golf Courses Inc Greensboro and Ayers Brothers handling lighting.
Mr. Wilburn Reese 72 of Beaver Dam section dies at his home Monday evening. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday by Rev. Wellington Swift at Beaver Dam church with interment there. He leaves a wife and siblings and children Roy Louis Dean Asa M J Williams Walter Call. The Reese family notes him as a loyal churchman and good neighbor.
Boone Civitan Club members Dr. G. K. Moose Cliff McConnell Fred McDade G. P. Hagaman L. L. Bingham D. L. Wilcox Ralph Winkler and Austin South attended a meeting of the Ashe County Civitan Club last Thursday at West Jefferson. Mrs. Mary Sprinkle of the State Welfare Department delivered the feature address describing the organization’s work in the state.
Betty Rene Jones, 16 months old, daughter of Mr and Mrs Orin Jones of Todd, was scalded to death last Wednesday at Slab Fork West Virginia where the family was staying. A tub of water upset by the child caused fatal burns. The body returned to Todd for burial in the family graveyard Friday. Mrs Jones is a niece of Mrs Poly Wyke of Boone.
R H Askew, former Appalachian State Teachers College student and Watauga teacher, won first place in the oratorical contest at New Mexico Normal University on April 15. His dissertation, The Constitution and the American Youth, advances him to a May 1 competition with Arizona and Texas in Las Vegas. The University commends his effort to represent the institution in the International Contest.
Fred Holler a 17 year old Laurel Fork resident was jailed after admitting passing forged checks at Watauga County Bank. He faced a preliminary hearing before Magistrate E Hahn and was bound over to the spring term of Watauga Superior Court with a $500 bond. He allegedly forged checks payable to Robert Greene and Fred Winkler in December and January to obtain money.
Blowing Rock hosts a senior sermon by Rev. O J Chandler on Sunday in the school auditorium, praising choices before life. The prior Saturday's class play Bashful Mr Bobbs drew strong applause with Paul Foster and Bynum Teague leading roles as Obediah and Miss Ruby Tolbert. The week also saw completion of a lawn project begun in March with community rally support and grass sowing.
Mrs. Mattie J. Greene died Saturday in Watauga Hospital after a brief illness from internal hemorrhages. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church with Dr. O. J. Chandler officiating and burial at Hayes graveyard near the Greene home. She was married in 1876 and connected to prominent local families. surviving are two children, a granddaughter, and a half brother.
Boone High School announces its closure next Thursday. A baccalaureate service is set for Sunday May 4 at 8 PM in the Methodist Church with Dr O J Chandler delivering the sermon. The class night play The Set of the Sail will be performed May 7 at 8 PM in the college auditorium.
The seventh grade graduation exercises are Wednesday with Ira T. Johnston of Jefferson as speaker. Thursday evening features the senior class day exercises and Friday evening the final graduation exercises with Dr Jenkins of Davenport College as chief speaker. Public invited to all events with no charges.
Boone to hold three day cleanup starting today with districts assigned and city trucks to collect rubbish. Local clubs and the Board of Aldermen back the project urging property owners to tidy yards plant flowers and preserve the town’s beauty ahead of the tourist season.
Editor Harris critiques the Press Association choosing Blowing Rock for its next meeting and praises Boone’s printing heritage The Wa Tauga Democrat office near the village park is described as a scenic print shop The piece recalls a past Boone editors visit and suggests a celebratory plan for a future convention day in Boone with a campus picnic at Appalachian Training School site.
A large crowd attended a Monday evening recital in the College auditorium featuring Misses Margaret Phillips and Be Goble. Mrs. I. G. Greer trained the pianists, with the College Glee Club directed by Miss Virginia Wary performing two fine numbers. Lieutenant Governor Fountain visited recently, and campus beautification continues with trees and shrubbery planned across the grounds.
J. W. Bryan of the Daniel Boone Chapter announces a fiddlers convention by the Izaak Walton League at the Boone courthouse on July 4 and 5 with large cash prizes. Fiddlers banjo players and clog dancers are urged to contact him to enter. Proceeds fund rearing pools and fishing-water restoration in the county.
Lieutenant Governor Richard T. Fountain addressed Boone Civic Club at the Daniel Boone Hotel. He praised Watauga County as progressive and diverse in crops, contrasting it with Eastern counties. He urged support for a state live-at-home program and commended local leaders and institutions.
Mr and Mrs W L Winkler return from Ocilla Ga where he closed a deal for the J R Squires farm near that place The 850 acre Irwin County property includes crops stock and machinery with 600 acres under cultivation and 100 acres in peanuts Transfer occurred last Thursday and a superintendent will manage until he moves this year He plans to live in both communities and has not disposed of other holdings in Watauga
Ruth Andrews 27 of Winston-Salem died at Baptist Hospital after a brief pneumonia illness. Daughter of the late Thomas and wife of Watauga County, born and raised there. Funeral services were held at Henson's Chapel Cove Creek conducted by Reverends Burgess and Chandler. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
