An Associated Press report from Luxor notes a surge of American travelers visiting the Valley of the Kings after the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb. Tourists bypass Cairo for Luxor, marvel at the new tomb, and visit Thebes ruins while buying tusk and hide souvenirs amid a desert heat and busy local commerce.
New River Light Plant east of Boone was completely destroyed by fire last Friday morning. The wooden dam remained undamaged. The plant supplied electricity to Boone and the training school, and funds were appropriated earlier for a new plant on the Middle Fork of New River to serve both, so rebuilding at the old site is unlikely. Trustees have not stated plans, but work on the new power development is expected to begin soon amid temporary darkness for the town and school.
The Training School basketball season closes after a balanced 5 wins and 5 losses. Players Williams and Henson starred at forwards with Howell contributing at times. Farthing at center developed notably. guards Miller and Horth carried much of the workload while Moretz showed star potential. Miller stood out as the best guard, guarding tightly and scoring steadily. The film showcases educational work student life self help and the Christian basis of the college with Dr Peery calling for wider use of film to promote Christian education and county papers.

Cove Creek High School reports the rainy show drew few attendees but was a success. Due to the weather a repeat performance is scheduled for Saturday night March 24 with changes and a string band. Proceeds fund essential school equipment. Faculty members Miss Ruth Rhodes and Miss Minnie Thornburg visited Lincolnton and Dallas. Reverend A J Gren delivered sermons at the Baptist church last weekend. School attendance remains steady as parents recognize the importance of the final weeks.
