Mr. A. M. Banner of Sugar Grove has completed twenty four years as rural route mail carrier from Sugar Grove to Beaver Dam. He now covers the twenty six mile round trip by automobile reducing daily travel to half a day. He recalls fordings and hardships from early days when the road was a muddy trail and rivers had to be waded.

Jurors Drawn For April Term Of Watauga Superior Court

About 75 to 100 cases on the criminal docket include the re arraignment of Ed Stokes in the Ivy Greene shooting and Ephriam Wallace awaiting trial for the Thurston Oliver killing. Cicero Shepherd Killed In Wreck On Boone Trail
Cicero Shepherd of Parlear Wilkes County known in Watauga died Sunday around 6 pm when his car overturned three times after swinging into a side ditch on Boone Trail Highway near his home. He was 60, survived by wife, five children, mother and three brothers. Funeral at Lewis Fork Baptist Church Tuesday.

W. B. Baird Dies at Valle Crucis Monday Evening
William B. Baird, Valle Crucis farmer and Watauga County's first sheriff of this century, died at home Monday evening after a four week illness. He would have been 82 on April 20. Heart attack listed as cause. Funeral Wednesday at home with Rev. G. C. Graham and Rev. L. F. Kent. burial in Baird family cemetery. Surviving: six children Charles, John, Thomas J., Cluster, Clay, and Mrs. John H. Mast. Baird lifelong Valle Crucis resident and community leader, two term sheriff. He was a longtime Methodist. A pioneer citizen noted for public service.

After ten days of bitter cold and whiteout conditions in Watau County, a spell of sun returned. Snow and ice damaged plumbing, delayed buses, and killed early fruit as crews battled drifting snow and a 60 mile per hour gale. By Monday dawn the weather shifted, with clearing skies on the east side of the ridge and rapid road clearance underway.

Mrs A J McBride passes after long illness
Mrs A J McBride aged 79 died at her Mast community home last Friday after a long illness. The cause was a weakened heart. Interment was Saturday at 3 PM in the McBride family graveyard. Survived by husband Asa Wilson of Silverstone brother and Nelia Wilson Beaver Dam she lived in Watauga County all her life. She was a member of Advent Church.
