Jail Door Opens as Two Prisoners Make For Liberty
William Farr and Lee Thompson of West Virginia recently living on Yonahlassee Road near Blowing Rock are held on charges of gasoline theft car stealing and carrying concealed weapons. They attempted to flee as jail doors opened but were pursued and captured. Farr was nabbed near the I G Greer home in East Boone and Thompson eluded briefly after taking a student’s car before returning to Yonahlassee. Both await Recorder's Court next week.

Mexican Operetta Presented at College by Appalachian Glee Club
Pepita the Mexican operetta in two acts was staged by the Appalachian Glee Club in the College Auditorium last Friday and Saturday nights. The performances drew a large appreciative audience and received high praise for direction by Miss Virginia W and the capable main cast with a forty voice chorus. Ruth Ellen Konsland served as accompanist and credit was given to assistants Kelly Miles Antonakos Harwell LeMay Jackson and Rucker for the production.

Watauga Recorder Court to Hear 16 Criminal Docket Next Tuesday
The Watauga Recorder's Court will convene next Tuesday morning with Judge G M Sudderth presiding and Solicitor Charles T Zimmerman prosecuting a 16 case criminal docket, many transferred from the Superior Court. First up is State v Ruby South for liquor manufacturing, with additional cases including liquor violations, concealed weapons, larceny, and drunken driving. The court will sit daily until the docket is cleared, removing about 35 criminal and 45 civil cases from the Superior Court docket.

Mrs. Orrus Greer died February 18 in Inglewood California while visiting her eldest son. She endured a serious operation a year prior and did not recover. Survived by six grown children, she was a native of Oklahoma and previously lived in Rupert Idaho. Interment occurred in Rupert.

Wilkes farmer charged with murdering his son
Riley Moore, 36, of Wilkes County, is jailed on murder charges after his seven year old son Raymond was fatally shot at the family home in the Brushy Mountain area. A coroner's inquest found Moore responsible. testimony cited heavy drinking and no clear motive.
