The Appalachian Training School began with Capt. E. F. Lovill and B. B. Dougherty at the Lovill Home near Boone. Legislation, led by W. C. Newland and R. A. The institution later became Appalachian State Normal School in 1925, expanding rapidly with a plant valued at about 1 million dollars, a faculty of twenty two, and a robust demonstration school with modern facilities.
