Correction on highway No 69 survey dispute in county

The Democrat corrects misinformation about the board of county commissioners backing the No 69 highway survey from Todd to Boone. Citizens’ petition urged the lower route for better grade and shorter distance, but the board refused to sign though member Newton Howell favors the lower survey. Sixty nine is touted as a top mountain road, and reconciliation is hoped.

Appalachian State Normal opened its summer term with 914 enrolled and more on the way, a rise attributed to mild climate low costs and strong faculty. Midsummer events included a campus musical and a chapel talk noting Dr B Dougherty’s honorary Doctor of Literature from Elon College.

Tonsil Adenoid Clinic Set For June 22 25

The State Board of Health will run a four day ton sil adenoid clinic for school children aged 6 to 12 beginning Tuesday June 22. A traveling hospital unit with staff including a physician anesthetist eight nurses and an orderly will operate. Over 12 000 children have been treated in these clinics. The fee is 12 50 for paying families while free treatment is available for needy cases.

Ink Well Fight Flared in Capitol Hearing

Washington police report a scuffle on the House judiciary committee floor as Rep Rankin of Mississippi clashed with Commissioner Fenning of the District and counsel Hogan during an investigation into Fenning. Ink was thrown, a glass of water spilled, and both sides were separated. Rankin claimed he was struck. Hogan said Fenning tried to strike him.

Reynolds Strong in His Home County

Returns from Buncombe County precincts show Robert R Reynolds with 6920 votes and Lee S Overman with 2911. Zebulon Weaver leads in the tenth district with 8227 votes while Felix Alley has 1319. Community picnic plans and county harvest notes follow.

Des Moines Iowa June 8 Smith W Brookhart defeated United States Senator Albert B Cummins in Monday s Republican primary The vote this morning stood Brookhart 91476 Cummins 61108 Howard Clark 26608 Brookhart was ousted from the senate about two months ago in favor of Dan F Steck Democrat Senator Cummins has served eighteen years in the senate and is one of the administration s strongest supporters in the upper house.

Overman Wins by Large Majority in North Carolina Primary

In incomplete unofficial returns from Saturday's primary, Senator Lee S. Overman and Congressmen A. L. Bulwinkle and Zebulon Weaver appear renominated on the Democratic ticket. Overman leads Reynolds 114,244 to 75,075 with 1,325 of 1,717 precincts reported. Bulwinkle trails Dimette in the ninth district and Weaver leads Alley in the tenth.

Democratic leaders in New York say Governor Smith will run again for governor despite past claims he would not. The New York Times reported widespread confidence in his re election prospects if he becomes a candidate. Separately at UNC commencement 366 diplomas were awarded, the largest class in the university's history.
